Bellevue Today Parallels Bellevue's Bygones

We all know the story of General James Taylor, his farm, his daughters, the naming of the streets in Bellevue, etc., but there are many other tasty tidbits, personalities, places and events from Bellevue's past that give us an opulent history.  It is imperative that as the next generation of Bellevue matures we reminisce, pass on, preserve and educate ourselves on our precious past and prosperous future.  For example ... Fairfield Avenue has always been a hot spot for Bellevue business.  Today, if you take a stroll down Fairfield Avenue you see the Fairfield Coffee Shop, Jo-Anne's Beauty Shop, Schneider's Ice-cream and Candy store, and many other charming shops along the Avenue.  In 1894 in an attempt to attract more settlers to Bellevue the city officials put together a Bellevue brochure which read "Fairfield Avenue, running east to west through the entire town, in the principle business thoroughfare, and the business house are kept well stocked with the latest and best of everything in all branches of trade".  The Avenue is still Bellevue's business eye-catcher.  Not only has our Avenue always been notable, but our beautiful Bellevue homes have always been worth talking about.  Got for a stroll down Lake Street sometime and take a gander at the George Robson (Jr.) Mansion.  It is a Victorian style mansion with a lovely porch that wraps around two sides of what is now a four family apartment.  In the July 31, 1987 Bellevue Community News, the Robson Mansion was affectionately named "the House that 'Whiskey' Built" because of George Robson Sr. and George Robson Jr.'s family whiskey business Old 76 Distillery.  Bellevue also has beautiful churches.  Formerly Sacred Heart Church now Divine Mercy is still a breathtaking landmark for the community.  Our businesses, houses, and churches are full of rich history and you can say it comes from having such a remarkable bouquet of people who have been born, raised or passed through Bellevue.  To name a few, John F. Siple (1909 - 1939) was the Bellevue handwriting specialist.  He is noted for his review and analysis of the Lindberg-Hauptmann ransom notes.  We are well covered in the area of arts and musician Louis Talletine, a violinist and Lucian Hubbard, a noted director of movies in Hollywood.  We also have numerous military families here in Bellevue past and present that have served and are serving our great nation.  This is just a glimpse at what has been Bellevue and what is coming.  Let's celebrate and preserve our lovely little hometown way of life.
