Bellevue's Secret GardensWhile other communities may charge a fee to visit their gardens, The Friends of Bellevue are pleased to offer you this peek into five "secret gardens" found in our quaint city.
As you visit Bellevue in the Summer you are greeted with many public flowering gardens. But, also found within our neighborhoods are those private spaces that pique your curiosity and make you wonder...."what's beyond those gates"? The following tour takes you into five secret spaces to give you another glimpse of the beauty that can be found in Bellevue. All are owned by fellow Friends and locations are kept hidden -- otherwise they wouldn't be "secret". Enjoy!
Tucked within a corner of the Williamson's Addition neighborhood you find this little beauty...
In a space that used to house a large above ground pool
these Friends have reclaimed the space
and turned it back into a charming turn-of-the-century urban garden
filled with whimsy.
As you stroll through the Harris Heirs neighborhood you come across many homes with simple side yard gates;
but, none can boast of the charm found within this small garden. With its bubbling pond...
and inviting dining space, this garden....
is truly enjoyed by a retired fellow Friend.
Climbing the hill to the Nagel-Beyland neighborhood you'll find behind the gates
charming terraces carved into the hillside.....
supporting fountains and
planters brimming with color.....
and interest.
A visit to this neighborhood sometimes requires that you climb some steps to visit one of our little secrets;
...... you'll be glad you did...
for awaiting your visit are little vignettes to delight you
and give you a different perspective on hillside gardens
that offer respite after a hard day at work
or a charming space to enjoy a little refreshment.
Like north meeting south...as you leave the Nagel-Beyland neighborhood and enter the part of Bellevue developed by the Bellevue-Dayton Land Company, you'll find our last "secret garden" tucked behind a garage....
in true southern style, reminding the visitor....
that Bellevue truly is a part of the South.....
and gardens are important living areas to...
...enjoy some sweet tea and conversation. The Friends of Bellevue thank our fellow Friends who invited us into their "secret gardens". We encourage all our visitors to come to Bellevue and experience first hand the delights of this river town nestled along the mighty Ohio River. |
