2005 Curb Appeal Project

One of the neat incentives to being a member of the Friends of Bellevue is that you can make application to participate in our annual "Curb Appeal Project". By doing so a member can avail themselves to a $250.00 matching grant to assist in improving the facade of their home.

This year fellow Friend Kathy Barrett of 515 Van Voast Ave. was chosen as the 2005 Friends of Bellevue "Curb Appeal Project" grant recipient.  In her application Kathy stated that she wanted to replace an inappropriate timber retaining wall with  natural field stone to compliment the existing walls found in her neighborhood.

The following photos show how the "curb appeal grant" resulted in another beautiful monument wall to add to the many outstanding examples of this craft that can be found in our community.

Due to the interesting topography of Bellevue many homeowners have retaining walls of varying shapes and sizes.  On occasion previous owners of homes have used materials that have proven not to stand the test of time.

This retaining wall in front of 515 Van Voast Ave. was deteriorating due to age and water run-off.

Example of foundation failure due to rot.

Workmen removed the old landscape timbers and excavated for new footers.

Local stone mason, Frank Murphy, applies his craft in executing another outstanding field stone wall.

The finished projects lends both beauty and stability to the residence.

Throughout Bellevue people can view many fine examples of this field stone craft. Many walls date from the late 1800's to the early 1940's when cinder block became the preferred building material.  This new retaining wall joins hundreds of others that will be gracing our community for many years to come.

If you think you could benefit from the assistance offered by FOB's "Curb Appeal Project" consider joining Friends of Bellevue and you could be selected as this year's grant recipient.  It's easy to join FOB: Click on the Membership button above and complete the online membership form.
